When Your Dentist Says, “Bone Graft”

It’s for a good reason. A bone graft is a relatively safe procedure where FDA approved bone transplant chips, or artificial or harvested animal bone is surgically implanted in your jaw, under the gums. The reason this is done is to build up your bone back to normal levels so that your jaw can accept an implant, and/or be improved in strength and contour. The reasons for bone loss in the first place are many. If you lose a tooth, the bone where it used to be can resorb, and shrink. It can shrink so much that there is not enough support for an implant to be placed, hence a bone graft is done. Other causes of dental bone loss are gum disease, injury, misalignment, dentures or cancer. Dental bone grafts are a low risk way to improve the functionality and appearance of your mouth, and improve your oral health in general. Best wishes – ProDentalFx, LLC
